Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved gambling on various card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and lost most times. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he might boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on poker.

The definite advancement in his abilities happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often compete against each other. He had access into some of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
